Yo y Mi Madre
Winner of Nuestras Raices 2023 Annual Latine Art Show
This portrait is inspired by Rosen Jaden 's poem “Si volviera a nacer, elegiría ser la madre de mi
madre.” The poem represents the desire to heal our parents from having to sacrifice their
childhood. Here I'm holding my mother as a child; both our dresses are adorned with flowers
drawn and embroidered by my ma’ Chila (grandmother). My mother carries a guayaba that
reminds us both of the place we call home, nuestras raíces en Michoacán. Este retrato
representa el amor y el cariño que tengo por mi madre ‘porque si la quiero tanto siendo su hija,
como la quería cuando al nacer la tuviera entre mis brazos!’

This artwork is a representation of masculinity and finding strength in inner femininity. Growing up, the men in my life rarely shared their vulnerability. Rather, they were taught to be tough and silent. They didn't share their burdens with their wives, daughters, or mothers; they shared it with Our Mother, La Virgen de Guadalupe. She's a spiritual force that in many ways represents the forgiving mother we seek: the mother that comforts us and enrobes us in her cloak. He's a Man sure of his masculinity while embracing the feminine side that lies within every machista hetero male.
